"Medicine is the study of diseases and what causes people to die," Chiropractor Meleah Mauldin said. "Chiropractic is the study of health and what causes people to live."

Mauldin said her favorite part of chiropractics is witnessing the miracle of the body healing itself. A common misconception of chiropractic care is that only people with pain can benefit from the adjustments, Mauldin said.

After recurring bouts of ear infections with her 18-month-old daughter, Samara Pernice was at her wit's end. That's when she turned to a chiropractor for help.

After several visits that involved gentle manipulations near the child's ears and some vitamin therapy, the girl's ears were clear and she hasn't had an ear infection since. Brian Kelling, a Kearney chiropractor for 22 years, said that most medicine treats symptoms and not the cause of illnesses.

Call it the Imelda theory: You can't get away with wearing high heels forever. Sooner or later -- and in many instances sooner -- high heels will take their toll on you, whether they strike your feet or back first, experts say.

Wearing high heels changes the biomechanics of walking and can have an impact on the entire structure of the foot and the relationship of the knee to the ankle, he says. But there are steps (so to speak) you can take to minimize the damage that your to-die-for heels do.

Physicists in Arizona State University have designed a revolutionary laser technique which can destroy viruses and bacteria such as AIDS.

The research, published on Thursday November 1 in the Institute of Physics' Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, discusses how pulses from an infrared laser can be fine-tuned to discriminate between problem microorganisms and human cells.

In a unique experiment, its rolling pastures and ploughed fields have been split into two so that conventional and organic produce can be grown side by side.

It has enabled scientists to test the alternative foods rigorously and answer a question that most shoppers ask themselves on a regular basis: is buying organic better for you? Already one conclusion is clear: organically produced crops and dairy milk usually contain more "beneficial compounds" believed to help to combat disease.

Osteoarthritis is commonly considered a "wear-and-tear" process and is associated with degenerative changes in the disc.

This derangement causes an increased strain, as well as a loss of motion of the gliding joints of the spine. These gliding joints (facets) are found in pairs, along the entire spine, and their function is to allow for movement and flexibility of the spine.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill Thursday that sought to provide greater state control of a controversial board that regulates chiropractors, arguing that changes already under way are enough.

Senate Bill 801 would have put a measure on the June ballot to strip the Board of Chiropractic Examiners of its historic autonomy by making it a part of a state department that oversees other professional licensing boards. The board was created by a 1922 initiative that for 85 years has largely governed the profession.

Newport Beach-based Dr. Melissa Ritter, D.C., is using a new type of laser beam to treat the pain therapeutically that so many of us live with every day.

Amazingly, her success rate treating patients with moderate to severe arthritic pain has been up to 90%. And, it lasts! She uses a new technology that combines a synchronized, high-powered, dual wavelength infrared laser in a single beam aimed directly at the origin of the pain, reducing and often completely eliminating the pain.
