by A. Pawlowski
May 13, 2015
When it comes to protecting your skin from bug bites, DEET - a popular ingredient that some people eye with suspicion - has some serious competition.
The top scorers included Sawyers Fisherman's Formula, whose active ingredient was 20 percent picaridin; and Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, which contained 30 percent oil of lemon eucalyptus to keep bugs at bay.
Back (or neck) breaking work
The Daily Eastern News
by Aaron Seidlitz
November 7, 2005
It is a moment of anticipation. Amidst a doctor's voice telling you to relax and saying that this is going to be such a simple procedure that you will leave saying, "that was it, that's all it took," you all of a sudden hear the noise ...
"cc-rr-ACK." For a second I took the time to realize that was indeed my neck that just made that usually horrifying sound. The loudness of my neck cracking was then validated by my doctor's reaction of, and I believe this is a technical term, "wowie!" Soon after it is done, though, I had feelings only of relief and confidence in my doctor.
Replace Household Products with Coconut Oil
by Abby Quillen
July 23, 2015
Coconut oil can handle the toughest scrubbing, reconditioning, and greasing jobs. Learn how to replace expensive and toxic products with coconut oil.
If you haven't switched to non-toxic household products yet, now is the time. Each year the U.S Poison Control hotline receives thousands of calls regarding accidental poisoning by common household cleaners and products. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) warns that 53 percent of the household cleaners they reviewed contain ingredients that can harm our lungs. Some products also contain carcinogens, such as formaldehyde and chloroform. Even more concerning, just seven percent of cleaners adequately disclose harmful ingredients. And the EWG warns many commercial "green cleaners" are equally misleading.
An alternative perspective

For many of us, homeopathy is one of those things we've heard of... but we might not be able to describe it, exactly.
Why are we talking about this? Well, the FTC will be hosting a free, public workshop on September 21, 2015, to take a closer look at advertising for over-the-counter homeopathic products. Because there are plenty of products, and plenty of ads for them. You can find the products in stores and pharmacies, on the shelf right next to conventional medicine - and you've probably seen the ads online or on TV.
Study Finds Scented Candles and Air Fresheners Pose Dangerous Health Risks
by Alexis Hobbs
February 12, 2017
The holiday season is the perfect time get out those scented candles and stock up on new ones. Apple pie, pumpkin spice, and evergreen are some of our favorites - year round, really. But some of the results from recent studies have given us pause.
It started when we spied an article by John Naish of the Daily Mail - the reporter said he found evidence to suggest that scented candles could actually make us quite sick. And it's not just candles; apparently "aerosols, plug-ins, gels, and incense sticks" are also troubling. The fear lies in the chemicals that can be found in the fragrance and wax. While more research certainly needs to be done to make a truly definitive statement, some researchers feel that extended, long-term use of certain scented items might lead to asthma, lung damage, or - in extreme cases - even cancer.
Poor-fitting Athletic Shoes Can Lead to Back Pain, Chiropractors Say
by American Chiropractic Association
December 6, 2005
ARLINGTON, Va., -- Too many people choose fashion over function when purchasing running shoes, not realizing that poor-fitting shoes
can do more than hurt their stride; they can also lead to pain throughout the body.
Because footwear plays such an important role in the functional biomechanics of the human body -- especially for runners and other athletes -- choosing the right shoe can help eliminate pain in your back, hips, knees and feet, says the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). "Your feet are the foundation of your body, and if they are not properly supported you can have problems anywhere from the bottom of your feet up through your neck," explains Jeffery Solomon, DC, president of the ACA's Council on Sports Injuries & Physical Fitness.
Turn to kinesiology tape for 'treatment between treatment'
by Amy Verner
June 20, 2011
Since last week, people have been asking whether I have been sporting some stylish, new body art. In fact, I have had my foot and ankle covered in SpiderTech kinesiology tape to help heal a soft-tissue injury.
But while I am new to the world of kinesiology tape, kinesiology tape is not new to the world. But while I am new to the world of kinesiology tape, kinesiology tape is not new to the world. It dates back to the 1970s when Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase developed a cotton tape with an acrylic adhesive that could be used to treat a variety of conditions, from reducing inflammation to activating underused muscles. It also may offer some relief for cancer patients suffering from lymphedema.

Laser Therapy Comes to Tuolumne County
Reliable Answers (CA)
by Annette M. Hall
May 3, 2006
Laser Therapy is a revolutionary treatment option that is providing lasting pain relief from long-term ailments often responsible for years of suffering.
It wasn't that long ago that people with knee injuries were forced to endure surgery and long months of recovery time. Surgery was a dreaded experience and the outcome was never all that optimistic until laparoscopic surgery came along. With smaller incisions came faster recovery times and faster healing. Wouldn't it be terrific if you could get that same healing power without the surgery' Many Chiropractic patients are doing just that.
FDA Seeks to Redefine 'Healthy'
by Annie Gasparro
May 13, 2016
The Food and Drug Administration is kicking off a review of the 1990s official definition of "healthy" at the urging of food companies and lawmakers.
How is it possible a sugary cereal could be considered healthy but not almonds, avocados and salmon? Because the science of healthy eating has changed since the Food and Drug Administration wrote the current guidelines in the 1990s. Believe it or not, none of those foods would be considered "healthy" under the FDA's current guidelines.
