Blend lemon juice with a little honey, then add a pinch of cayenne pepper and swallow. The honey coats your throat, soothing irritated tissues, while the lemon reduces inflammation and delivers a dose of infection-fighting vitamin C. The red pepper increases circulation to the area, which hastens the healing process.

FOODS greatly influence the brain. Poor diets, particularly those with too much sugar, caffeine and junk food are a common cause of depression and irritability. The brain will produce stress hormones when we eat the wrong things. However, on a good, balanced diet, the brain will produce serotonin, which is a relaxer. So fix your diet!

Wheat is a major source of gluten. Following a gluten-free diet used to be a dreaded challenge faced only by people who had celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Now gluten-free products are easy to find and going gluten-free has become a diet option for anyone. But it's not always the best choice. If you're not careful about your food selections, a gluten-free diet may lack essential nutrients. Gluten proteins in wheat, rye and barley trigger an autoimmune response in people with celiac disease. Following a gluten-free diet relieves celiac-related symptoms. However, a medical professional should make such a diagnosis. Deciding to go gluten-free can be risky. You might not be as strict about avoiding sources and forms of gluten as you must be. If you have celiac disease, eating even a small amount of gluten damages your intestines, resulting in health problems throughout your body. Undiagnosed celiac disease also can increase your risk of osteoporosis and thyroid disease. If you experience bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, joint pain or a skin rash, consult your doctor.

Back sleeper? Side sleeper? Stomach sleeper? All of the above? Humans can sleep in a wide variety of positions. Not one position is technically the "right" way to sleep, although there are strong arguments for some over others.

The most common sleeping positions are back, side, and stomach. There are some other contortionist positions but we will stick with these for now. With each position, the placement and type of pillow should differ. If you always sleep in the same position, you may want to try the others to see if it makes a change in your comfort level and quality of sleep.

An old Chinese proverb states, "Only when one cannot sleep does one know how long the night is." Anyone who's ever experienced an occasional bout with insomnia-and that's most of us-can relate to this all too well.

A recent study by the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that teens between ages 15 and 19 now account for almost 60 percent of all Tommy John surgeries. This is followed by the 20-to-24-year-old age group.

Most often, these and related shoulder injuries are caused by extreme stress placed on the shoulder by overhand motions repeatedly performed at high speeds. This is especially true for young pitchers, swimmers, and athletes who are not only developing physically but are also continually overwhelmed by repetitive stress to the shoulder and surrounding ligaments, muscles, and tendons. In fact, "Little League elbow" is now a common diagnosis for many 10-to-14-year-olds.

The stories became far too frequent to ignore. Emails from folks with allergic or digestive issues to wheat in the United States experienced no symptoms whatsoever when they tried eating pasta on vacation in Italy.

Confused parents wondering why wheat consumption sometimes triggered autoimmune reactions in their children but not at other times. In my own home, I've long pondered why my husband can eat the wheat I prepare at home, but he experiences negative digestive effects eating even a single roll in a restaurant.
