Everyone has noticed the recent rise of gluten intolerance. Grocery store shelves are now lined with products which avoid using gluten in any form.

But we still have little idea why this food allergy has swept through our population to produce such widespread problems. Articles associate it with celiac disease (sprue) and leaky gut, in which undigested food proteins are allowed to enter the blood stream, causing numerous inflammatory problems. Gluten sensitive friends and family of mine have tried eating USDA organic wheat products. Some have had positive results, others still cannot tolerate gluten from any source.

In the US and many countries there's a refusal to force manufacturers to clearly label products that use GMO's. Wheat, Corn, almost all food stocks are now GMO's and many are used as feed to animals.

Look at low chicken and pork prices in the US and what are those animals fed mostly? GMO's. When I was a kid in the 70's the news talked about vaccines being implanted into crops in Africa to help fight disease. A noble goal indeed. Instead this has turned into a vicious money game with big players like Monsanto controlling whole markets with government support. The big questions other than following the money is simply why not label foods GMO and give the public the choice? Why suppress information? Why suppress studies? Even foods labelled as Organic or with organic practices may be grown from GMO seeds.

Caught between conflicting moral arguments, Gov. Jerry Brown, a former Jesuit seminary student, signed a measure Monday allowing physicians to prescribe lethal doses of drugs to terminally ill patients who want to hasten their deaths.

"In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death," Brown wrote in a signing message. "I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn't deny that right to others."

Our GG (great grandmother, my mother) used to add Epsom salts to this grandma's bath when she was a child as a cure all. She told us it was a cure for so much handed down in her family in Europe.

We had Epsom salt baths sparingly, but GG luxuriated in her Epsom salt baths regularly and emerged refreshed and calm. She made us want such baths because she said they were special. Watching her and how she felt after her special bath made us want them more. As GG aged, she continued to be refreshed and relaxed in her Epsom salt baths, and whenever I complained of anything, that was her recommended cure.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as crib death or cot death, is the number one cause of death for infants from one month to one year of age. 90% of all SIDS deaths are in babies under six months old.

Dr. James Sprott, OBE, a New Zealand scientist and chemist, states that crib death is caused by toxic gases, which can be generated from a baby's mattress. He says chemical compounds containing phosphorus, arsenic and antimony have been added to mattresses as fire retardants and for other purposes since the early 1950's. A fungus that commonly grows in bedding can interact with these chemicals to create poisonous gases (Richardson 1994).

Though parents around the world have the same goals, American parents like me (despite our very best intentions) have gotten it all backwards.

We need to let 3-year-olds climb trees and 5-year-olds use knives. Imagine my surprise when I came across a kindergartener in the German forest whittling away on a stick with a penknife. His teacher, Wolfgang, lightheartedly dismissed my concern: "No one's ever lost a finger!" Similarly, Brittany, an American mom, was stunned when she moved her young family to Sweden and saw 3- and 4-year-olds with no adult supervision bicycling down the street, climbing the roofs of playhouses and scaling tall trees with no adult supervision.

Our pancreas is a small organ that plays a big part when it comes to our health. Pancreatitis is much more common than many people think. The most important function of the pancreas is to produce digestive juices and digestive hormones.

The pancreas also makes insulin, which controls the amount of sugar in our blood. Without insulin, we would die. The pancreas is hidden deep in the body between our other organs which makes seeing it for a visual inspection very difficult. The most common symptoms of pancreatitis include a burning pain in the upper abdomen that radiates to the back and nausea and vomiting that becomes severe when you try to eat. During an acute attack, people have a severe spike in their heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. Chronic pancreatitis leads to low energy levels, diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, and cancer of the pancreas.

"Have you done your taxes yet?" Your co-worker is just making casual conversation over coffee and bagels, but the words send a wave of stress and maybe even panic through you.

Most people skip over medical expense deductions because the amount spent on medical expenses has to surpass a sizable minimum. It didn't look like I would make the minimum, but then Turbo Tax asked, "Did you visit a chiropractor or acupuncturist this year?" Did I?! You bet I did...

Fried foods damage your body and brain in many different ways, and it's not just a long term consequence, but a short term detriment as well. Just as a car needs good clean oil to run efficiently and not break down.

You simply can't lie to yourself much with fried food because the ill effects are just too obvious. Simply grab some belly fat or pinch an inch on a hip or thigh, and then try to convince yourself it's okay. Plus, obesity basically means people are storing fried foods and carbohydrates as body fat, and for about a third of Americans, it's like carry-on luggage you can't set down, or at least not until you sit down. Face the facts:
