The musculoskeletal system - bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons - is the domain of a chiropractor, who treats patients suffering from back and neck pain, headaches, muscle pain and various other ailments.

While most of us know that chiropractors manipulate a patient's spinal column and joints, they also make diagnoses and perform treatments like massage, acupuncture and ultrasound. A chiropractor uses equipment like TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machines, gravity tables and traction devices to help relieve pressure on the spine. They also may advise patients on overall health issues. Chiropractors aim to help their patients avoid the use of drugs or surgery to alleviate pain.

CDC studies suggest that a lower rate of salt consumption might actually be harmful. People who consume the least amount of salt were actually found to have the highest rates of cardiovascular disease.

The most commonly known additive found in salt is iodine, which has been added to salt for almost a century in order to help prevent thyroid disease. While iodine is important to thyroid health, the iodine added to salt is not a form that is very absorbable by the body and therefore, is largely wasted. When iodine is added to salt, it is necessary for manufacturers to also add in sugar, usually in the form of corn syrup (*GMO alert*). Iodine, in the form of potassium iodide, is unstable when combined with sodium. By adding sugar to the salt/iodine combination, the manufacturer is able to prevent oxidation and keep the iodine stable. The sugar also prevents discoloration that may make salt appear unpalatable. When looking for sugar on the nutrition label for salt, look for the word "dextrose."

It is no surprise that many reporters still think of chiropractic as a treatment for senior citizens and blue collar workers. The concept of chiropractic for children is still new and perhaps a bit startling to the general public.

Researchers conclude, "This study has shown that children raised under chiropractic care are less prone to infectious processes such as otitis media and tonsillitis, and that their immune systems are better able to cope with allergens such as pollen, weeds, grasses, etc., as compared to children raised under allopathic care."

Neck pain has been burdening the human race for centuries. It can vary from occasional discomfort to chronic and severe pain and despite the commonality of it; little progress has been made in pin-pointing the exact causes and remedies.

Even today, it can be extremely tricky to diagnose and even harder to get rid of. The primary problem with neck pain is misdiagnosis. If you do visit a doctor you will likely be pigeon-holed into another case of "chronic neck pain," a very broad and not easily remedied diagnosis.

Many aspects of modern technology make people a bit uneasy, but genetically modified foods may be in a class by themselves. Labs all around the world make genetic modifications of organisms-bacteria, plants, and animals-365 days a year.

And some of the results of that work have been ingested by humans for years, often in the form of life-saving drugs. But genetically modified crops remain controversial around the globe, and while they're commonly used in the US, they have almost no presence in the European market. The worries about GMO foods largely focus on their safety, but much of the debate ignores the extensive studies that have been done to understand both the potential risks and what we've learned about them. In response to this perceived gap in understanding, a group of Italian scientists have now performed a comprehensive review of the scientific literature on GMO crops (we were made aware of the review by Real Clear Science). The results suggest that GMO crops are safe for us, but there are some remaining concerns about their environmental impact that need to be nailed down. In the meantime, the authors suggest that GMOs represent a serious challenge for science communication with the public.
