Many people who have aches and pains in their joints will visit a chiropractor. What many might not know is that it's a popular practice for horses as well.

Kristen Vetter of rural East Grand Forks gave us a demonstration of her chiropractic work on one of her horses at her farm. She was just certified last September and now is working on ten or more horses a week. This involves a series of touches and inspections that begin at the head and work towards the tail of the horse. Vetter can identify vertebrae that may be out of alignment by the horses tension to a touch, and then she gently moves the joint back into place.

The connection between being a chiropractor and eschewing vaccines goes back to an emphasis on subluxations as a cause for disease rather than, you know, infectious agents like viruses and bacteria.

Chiropracty subluxated itself into medicine in 1895 when a "magnetic healer and grocer" in Iowa claimed that he'd restored a deaf man's hearing using the approach. The practice is based on the idea that the things that are wrong with you arise from misalignments of your spinal column (subluxations), but the level of adherence to this odd philosophy among chiropractors can vary.

Austin -- Cold lasers, also known as low level lasers, have been utilized throughout Europe for decades. While new to the United States, decades of worldwide cold laser use have produced few, if any, widely reported of side effects to date.

Laser light has been thought to stimulate tissue and aid tissue to heal more rapidly. Common uses include pain control, wound care, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and many other painful and debilitating conditions. Many doctors use the comparison of taking a sick plant and putting it out in the sun in describing how they believe laser light helps to heal tissue in the human body. Laser light penetrates the body and is thought to stimulate metabolic process in the body.

Walk into a chiropractor's office and you will see necks, backs and ankles being cracked - and, increasingly, some of them will belong to children.

With the demand for complementary and alternative treatment increasing, more people are considering the use of chiropractic care for children and newborns. In fact, it is the most common type of complementary and alternative care for children, according to a study done by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association in 2010. The study showed an estimated 86 million pediatric visits were made to chiropractors throughout the United States, Canada and Europe in 2007, the most recent data available.

Doctors nowadays would likely diagnose Einstein with attention deficit disorder, chiropractor Dr. Susan Cunico told a small group of parents, mostly mothers, assembled at Belle Reve senior facility in Milford.

The symptoms include "constant talking, inattention, fidgeting, and blurting out," said Cunico, who practices in Sandyston, N.J. But many children who have those symptoms are quite bright and symptoms can have varied causes, she said. In fact, they may fall within the spectrum of normal childhood behavior.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease characterized by multiple tender points, muscle pain and fatigue that affects as many as six million people in the U. S. The condition is much more common in women than in men.

Symptoms include pain in all four quadrants of the body, sleep disturbances, headaches, painful menstrual periods and irritable bowel syndrome. Some women experience morning stiffness, restless leg syndrome and cognitive issues. Therapy consists of nutritional and behavioral changes to relieve stress and improve muscle and nerve function.

EAST ALTON - For Dr. Danny Vetter, D.C., chiropractic health is more than a quick crack of the back.

"The benefits of chiropractic health include being totally drug-free and surgery-free. It uses the body's own ability to heal itself. We don't cure anything; we facilitate the body's natural healing. God didn't make mistakes when He made us. The natural state of your body is health, not disease."

A passion for travel and an instinct to help has driven Dr. Lona Cook to Haiti and the Dominican Republic for the second straight year.

Cook is a chiropractor. "A lot of times, people want to know: "Well, as chiropractors, what can you do?" Cook doesn't leave them unimpressed. On her second mission trip to Costa Rica, Cook met a wheelchair-bound man who, after one adjustment, came back the next day with a walker.

Well-meaning but misinformed friends, relatives and even health professionals often dissuade parents from placing their children under chiropractic care.

This often is based on the misperception that a chiropractic adjustment is "too rough," and that a young child's spine should not be "subjected" to it. In reality, a chiropractic adjustment has much in common with a handshake.

Established in 1895, the chiropractic profession has grown to become the third largest health profession in the United States.

Chiropractic comes from a Greek word that means "effective treatment by hand". Chiropractic, as a healing art, is based on the understanding that a normally functioning spine and nervous system is critical to good health. Research has consistently proven that chiropractic gets people better faster with less cost and longer-lasting results than traditional medical care for back and neck pain.
