Learning the limits of overuse injuries
by Ira A. Shapiro, DC, and Edward C. Camacho, DC
November 20, 2015
A recent study by the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that teens between ages 15 and 19 now account for almost 60 percent of all Tommy John surgeries. This is followed by the 20-to-24-year-old age group.
Most often, these and related shoulder injuries are caused by extreme stress placed on the shoulder by overhand motions repeatedly performed at high speeds. This is especially true for young pitchers, swimmers, and athletes who are not only developing physically but are also continually overwhelmed by repetitive stress to the shoulder and surrounding ligaments, muscles, and tendons. In fact, "Little League elbow" is now a common diagnosis for many 10-to-14-year-olds.
Chiropractic care for ankylosing spondylitis
by Christina DeBusk
July 7, 2015
Chiropractors can be the ones to detect and treat this painful condition. The Spondylitis Association of America defines ankylosing spondylitis (AS) as "a form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, although other joints can become involved."
This condition creates inflammation in the vertebrae that can lead to pain. If severe enough, new boney structures form, fusing portions of the spine and immobilizing it. Often this results in a forward-leaning position, most commonly affecting the sacroiliac joints (the joints where the spine meets the pelvis).
Right from the start

New chiropractors are well advised to study those with more experience. But you can learn a lot from those who are just starting out of the gate, too.
But of course the Internet is useful in a variety of ways - not the least of which is marketing. "When I was in practice 40 years ago, you had to be listed in the Yellow Pages," Singer says. These days, the advice is different for the 1,000 practices he consults with each year. "Patients don't find you in the Yellow Pages. They find you on the Internet." But this isn't news, right? "You would be surprised at how many established chiropractors have no website or don't know what social media is," notes Nona Djavid, DC. In 2008, she started two businesses: her own practice and MyChiroPractice Inc., a marketing and branding company exclusively for chiropractors.
Professional basketball athletes rely significantly on chiropractic care
March 24, 2012
As professional basketball continues to make headlines mid-season and March Madness is underway for college basketball, the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress points to the role of chiropractors in helping basketball players perform their best.
"Chiropractic care helps to give a team and athlete a competitive advantage in whatever sport they participate in. Specifically, it helps to enhance endurance levels, assist in the recovery from many structural injuries and achieve overall peak performance," shares Dr. Craig Buhler, who for 26 years served as the team DC for the Utah Jazz, treating countless athletes including NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton. "By including chiropractic into an athlete's regular health practices, one is able to maximize training and optimize functional balance and skill."
Legal Issues: Unprecedented Court Ruling for MAC!
May 2, 2011
Michigan Chiropractors Win Class Status Against Blue Cross and Blue Care Network
In Michigan Association of Chiropractors and Toby A. Mitchell, DC, v. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the MAC asserts that our members who are or have been participating providers with BCBSM have been harmed because BCBSM has engaged in a practice of not paying chiropractic providers for covered chiropractic services, while paying other non-chiropractic providers for providing the same services. We further assert that MAC members who are not, and have not been, participating providers have been damaged by being discouraged from entering into provider contracts with BCBSM by these same policies, which we believe to be in violation of not only Michigan law, but also the individual provider contracts themselves and the 1999 Settlement Agreement.
Is Your Horse Pick for the Kentucky Derby a Winner? With Chiropractic Care, It Might Be!
May 5, 2016
Most Off-the-track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) need some chiropractic care. Their hips are slammed from behind in the starting gate, their heads are twisted sideways by the pony horse or on the hot walker.
They are strong animals - they resist and pull muscles. Just as we humans can benefit from good chiropractic care, followed by stretching exercises to help us stay aligned, so do horses.
Chiropractic: As Individual as a Handshake
by Charles Masarsky, DC
June 12, 2008
Well-meaning but misinformed friends, relatives and even health professionals often dissuade parents from placing their children under chiropractic care.
This often is based on the misperception that a chiropractic adjustment is "too rough," and that a young child's spine should not be "subjected" to it. In reality, a chiropractic adjustment has much in common with a handshake.
Save the Gallbladder - PURGE!
by Doug Heise, D.C.
July 22, 2017
Color is incomprehensible to the blind. Harmony is beyond the senses of the tone deaf. To the King, the voices of peasants are lost and unheard! So it is with the tragedy of the citizen of this advanced technological society.
Gallbladder dysfunction is one of the most common health problems encountered in chiropractic as well as medical offices today. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most misunderstood. More than 600,000 cholecystectomies are performed in this country alone every year, despite overwhelming evidence that most are unnecessary. Repeated warnings have been printed in medical journals against this practice, but to avail.
Ask the Doctor: How to Manage Tension Headaches
May 16, 2012
The featured question this week: I have headaches a few times a week. They start in the neck, and I usually wind up with a headache by the evening. Is there anything I can do?
As a chiropractor, I see this type of headache a lot. Tension headaches usually begin with some tension in the neck and shoulders and by evening, the tension turns into a headache that is oftentimes at the base of the skull. Unfortunately, a lot of our daily activities are going to predispose many of us to getting these type of headaches.
Chiropractic Treatment for Scoliosis
September 14, 2017
Scoliosis is an intricate disease. Experts still don't know what causes 80% of scoliosis cases, and there is no cure. But there's still hope! There are proven methods to treat scoliosis and reduce its symptoms.
Traditional chiropractic treatment applies a general approach, similar to what the chiropractor would do for any other patient experiencing back problems. However, if the chiropractor is not practiced in scoliosis and familiar with its intricacies, traditional chiropractic treatment is unlikely to have much of an effect on the Cobb angle. This method is only recommended for patients over the age of 13 with very small Cobb angles of 20 degrees or less. Traditional treatment can be useful for relieving pain, but not for physically straightening the Cobb angle in scoliosis patients.
